This past Friday I played one of my most high profile gigs to date. It was a fundraiser for the local hospital that went under the name N? Mele Makana: A Slack Key Concert Series. Of course, I don’t play slack key, but Uncle George Kahumoku Jr. (who does and was headlining) invited me to be a part of the show as one half of the “next generation” set (Anuhea Lim made up the other half). Together we played through four songs onstage at the Honoka’a People’s Theater and then joined Uncle George and his guest, Martin Pahinui for a jam session at the end. Not bad for a Friday night.
Here’s one of the songs I led, Herb Ohta Jr.’s “Beachwalk.”
