Uluwehi O Ke Kai – Hapa

hapaThis is a Hawaiian standard written by Edith Kanaka’ole about picking seaweed. Hapa popularized it on their self-titled debut and it has since become the contemporary version everyone turns to.

Uluwehi O Ke Kai has only three chords and follows a common progression used in many Hawaiian songs. I put this version in the key of G because that’s where Hapa does it and also because I can sing it when teaching without blowing my voice out.

Brad, I love this song dearly — one of my favorites. I keep trying desperately to find tabs for it online. Thanks very much for posting the chords. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that one day you will consider doing a tab transcription of it. I enjoy your site very much, keep up the great work. :)

Hi Staci, The riff works great on the ‘ukulele in the key of C, but is kind of mediocre in G. I’ll keep you in mind though and see if I can come up with something!
