Visit to the KVMR 89.5 FM Studio

December 7, 2008

I had the opportunity to visit Nevada City, CA and Michael Keene at the KVMR studio today. Michael is the DJ for the “Kanikapila” show on Sundays from 9 to 12 in the morning. Tune in and listen: 89.5 FM throughout most of the foothills and central valley, or listen online. The long drive from Placerville to Navada City was totally worth it. I had a great time learning from Michael. We talked Hawaiian music and he showed me the basics of how the studio works. Then he handed me a set of headphones, pushed a mic my way, and we talked for a little while on-air about my music and time in Hawaii. He also had me read some ad spots. Big mahalos to Michael Keene for letting me come out and be in the studio for his show.

While I was in the studio, my family found something “really cool that you have to see”. So they took me to a toy store across from the studio and put me face to face with this:

What is it? I am told it is an orchestrian. It is pretty much a computer driven band. Select a song and a piano, accordion, guitar, banjo, and percussion all start to play. The guitar and banjo have little tabs that hold the frets, and “fingers” to pick them. The piano has hammers to hit the strings… You get the idea, it’s a little scary. I selected “Flight of the Bumblebee” and “Star Wars” for it to play. Weird.
