Idea – Sultans of Swing Riff

Sultans of SwingHere’s a fun guitar lick that transfers easily to ‘ukulele from Dire Straits’ song “Sultans of Swing“. The idea here is to hold some of the bends while you play other notes. Right off the bat this almost steel guitar type bending can make your playing sound more country like. This riff is located at 1:37 leading into an F chord from A7 (hence the out-of-key C# – the song is in Dm).

To play this, bend the 2nd fret, C string up a whole step and hold it while playing the three open string notes. Then bend the 3rd fret, E string a whole step and pick the 4th fret, A string, pick and release the bend and pick the 2nd fret. The last bit is just a bend that is bent and released three times, only picking the first.

C |-2b4====(4)------------------------

    Great song! Any chance of convincing you to post a short video demo of this?
