One thing that I have been focusing on is knowing exactly where a whole step is when it involves transferring to a higher note on an open string– since visualizing the number of frets can be difficult. For example:
– it is a whole step from the 3rd fret on the G string to the open C string
– it is a whole step from the 3rd fret on C string to the 1st fret on the E string
– it is whole step from the 3rd fret on the E string to the open A string

Good tip, Anna! The open strings are weird since you can’t see the lower finger for reference. It’s good that there aren’t very many of these so it’s not too hard to just memorize them.
